Artjom tries to cross illegally into Italy with his daughter Katja, where her mother Sveta had fled some time before and found work with the last coachman in Trieste. On their journey, along with other refugees, they are first caught by the Slovenian and then by the Italian police. While awaiting extradition, they undergo various procedures at police stations, and in a temporary shelter for foreigners they meet different refugees and their fates.
