The Soča has always been a border river. In its relatively short course, it links two completely different landscapes, the Alps and the Mediterranean. And indeed, it seems as if it is made up of two personalities. It even has two names. Soča is female. Isonzo is male. The Soča is a water of contradictions: alluring and dangerous, known for its emerald color and its bloody front. The First World War in these lands destroyed not only lives, villages, and fields, but also the relationship that people of the time nurtured with nature. The survivors had to start from nothing, and it seems that today we still live in this hastily reconstructed world. Encounters by the Soča reveal the contradictions we experience today in our relationship with nature. Compared to the life of the river, human life appears insignificant, and yet today man can intervene in the laws of nature. At a time when political borders are being removed, we must learn to set boundaries ourselves in our relationship with our shared river.
