Retrospective Oriente Vzhod / Occidente Zahod – Border Through Film and History continues its journey across European cities and will visit Belgrade on 7 and 8 May as part of the eleventh edition of the Days of Slovenian Film in Belgrade. The event is organised by the Association of Slovenes Sava in Belgrade under the artistic direction of Dragomir Zupanc.

The programme, hosted at the Yugoslav Cinematheque, begins on 7 May at 18:00 with a screening of short films made between 1960 and 2014: Our American Days (dir. Chiara Barbo, Andrea Magnani), Cranes Fly South (dir. Dorica Makuc), Abesinija (dir. Karpo Godina) and Krast (dir. Franco Giraldi). At 21:00, the opening ceremony features Felons, directed by Franci Slak and digitally restored by the Slovenian Film Centre.

On Thursday, 8 May, a round table, “Kinoatelje – GO! 25,” will take place at 12:00, dedicated to cross-border cooperation, the multicultural sphere and film heritage. At 17:00, the documentary Timeless River (2010) by Anja Medved and Nadja Velušček will be screened. Velušček is this year’s recipient of the France Štiglic Lifetime Achievement Award.

In Belgrade, too, the retrospective opens a space to reflect on borders as symbols of passage, dialogue and shared history through the art of cinema. The retrospective is part of the official programme of the European Capital of Culture GO! 2025.

Through the lens of the Oriente Vzhod / Occidente Zahod – Border Through Film and History retrospective, the cinematographies of Slovenia and Italy will shine in full light in 2025. Created with numerous partners, this film journey revives the rich cultural and historical heritage of the cross-border region. Through selected works, from fiction to documentary and newsreels, it embodies Europe’s multicultural experience.
